The Library of the University of Gdańsk was founded in 1970 at the same time when the University of Gdańsk was  established. The Library consists of the Main Library in Gdańsk-Oliwa, seven specialist libraries and the British Library. Apart from being an academic library it also serves as an educational, information and cultural centre for the whole region. The collection has an universal character. However, consideration is given to the disciplines represented at the University and maritime issues.
